Creative Writing
Writing samples of some of my original fiction works. They span across genres including fantasy, comedy, drama, horror and science fiction, for both young and mature audiences.
“Off Season” - A Comic
Here is an excerpt of my script for “Off Season,” my middle-grade horror graphic novel. It’s inspired by the Goosebumps franchise by R.L. Stine. The hero, a bookish and socially awkward eleven-year-old girl, Maddy, goes on vacation in an isolated beach town, where she makes her first-ever friend, the equally lonely Will. When vacation ends, Will convinces her to stay with him and live in eternal summer forever. What could possibly go wrong? Morbid secrets, sentient sand and disappearing tourists are just the tip of this nostalgic “fun in the sun” iceberg.
The target audience is middle grade (ages 9 - 12).
Inspirations include Goosebumps, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Halloweentown, and classic 1970s family entertainment.
“The Island of Poisons” - A Novel
This is an excerpt of a sci-fi and fantasy novel I am working on, the first of a series set in this particular world. It’s inspired by the “steampunk” and burgeoning “solarpunk” subcultures. It’s a story of pirates, sea creatures, the inexplicable, and the lengths humanity will go to prove themselves worthy and loved.
Ten years ago, an infamous pirate buried his legendary “treasure of nine nations” in the cursed and forbidden Island of Poisons, it’s assumed he, his crew and the treasure are lost forever. When the rebellious seventeen-year-old Tonraq stumbles upon the map to the island of poisons, he jumps on the chance for adventure and redemption. But he’s not the only one with eyes for the treasure–and he, his allies and his enemies quickly learn how the islands live up to their namesake.
The target audience is YA and over.
Inspirations include the works of Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and China Miéville’s The Scar.
“Ghost Hunter Yuki” - A CARTOON
A few sample scenes of a script for animated show/comic series. It’s a “magical girl” action series, with comedic, fantastical and light horror elements, and a dash of human drama. Imagine Buffy the Vampire Slayer with more sparkles and magic, or if Sailor Moon’s main villains were monsters or the things that go “bump” in the night. World mythology, folklore, monsters, cryptids, and legendary figures make up a large part of the cast, villainous or otherwise. The hero is a twelve-year-old girl who accidentally unleashes all the world’s magic into her new hometown. Her father and grandfather are reluctantly pulled in for the ride.
The target audience is YA and over. The rating would be about PG.
Inspriations include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sailor Moon and Gravity Falls.
“Queen of the Cryptids” - A Graphic Novel
The script of my comic, “Queen of the Cryptids,” an adventure and sci-fi tale. It stars the infamous Flatwoods Monster, and with the Mothman, the Jersey Devil and a Hopkinsville Goblin as supporting characters. When a bratty alien queen (equal parts Marie Antoinette and Cher from Clueless) escapes her execution, she crash lands on Earth. She’s determined to rebuild her ship and reclaim her throne — but she’ll have to play nice with the locals to survive. But the royal pain finds she still has a knack for making enemies–and she can’t outrun her past forever.
I would be open to making this pitch a TV series, or have multiple volumes.
Target audience is YA and over. The rating would be PG.
Inspirations include Clueless, Gravity Falls, and The United States of Cryptids by J.W. Ocker.
